Play It Cool
The stands at Cypress were drenched but Canadian fans cheered on through the sideways downpour. We had reason to cheer: reigning world champion Jenn Heil and her teammates Kristi Richards and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe had all qualified for the women's moguls final.
I had good reason to be proud: not one but two Play It Cool athletes were pushing the envelope. Kristi was looking incredible in the top half of her run but unfortunately her speed was out of check and she lost control after the first jump. While it was tragic to see her go down, Kristi performed by delivering a full back twist to the elation of her fans.
Then it was Jenn's turn to shine and shine she did. The gleaming crowd was going nuts and my heart was pounding out of my chest. She had an amazing run - smooth and clean through the moguls with excellent form and height in her jumps. My quads were burning from a few climbs at the climbing gym. I couldn't imagine what Jenn's quads felt like holding a squat position while smashing into monster moguls.
When I met Jenn last year I was taken aback by how small she was. How could such a tiny thing take on such massive bumps? Size is clearly no obstacle. Obviously I knew Jenn's legs were stronger than mine but wow can she master those moguls. Watching her ski to victory was brilliant and I was gutted to see the gold taken from her so quickly after it was in her hands. An Olympic silver medal is still an incredible achievement and although Jenn looked gutted too I sure hope she knows how proud she's made me and all Canadians.
Congratulations Jenn! We're so proud of our wee moguls phenom.
