We were among the first at MCC Eco-works, to use a product called "Nutrifor" (you can google it and "Ogogrow" is another) which combines wood chips and human bio-waste to create a super soil. I saw the results of growing plants in this soil, and it's amazing. I asked the FVRD if projects and products like this exist outside of BC, they responded saying "Not that we know of."
We know that GHG's are heating up our planet like a green house, and we also know that simply stopping the use of gas driven cars isn't going to stop the warming trend if the worlds last remaining forests get hacked down. I say; "If we can hack them down, then we can raise them up."
My idea starts with a plot of desert land close to the ocean. then using a simple desalinating structure (one that requires little to no electric power, like the one I came up with) we collect a large body of clean water in an underground resivoir under the desert sands. At the same time the water is collecting, we start up a Nutrifor soil plant, and get near by communities to contribute their bio-waste. The wood chips may need to be imported to the desert site. Once a good supply of water and soil are collected at the site; irrigation can be installed, the soil mixed with the desert sand and trees can start growing in a place that no one thinks things other than cactus can grow. I know we can do this and it appears that we may have to, as deforestation continues on our planet, and deserts begin to take over once fertile land. How hot is it going to have to get before we stop bitching about the causes and get working on some radical solutions? Of couse it's not as simple as it looks on paper, but the details can be hashed out as the project gets underway.
